The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath #1;

In chapter one you learn that the main character is from a small town no one has really ever heard of. She's also very poor. She lived in the same town for 19 years and never went anywhere. She won a scholarship writing poems and now works for a magazine. All of her expenses are payed for a month, as well at 10 other women. They all go to a party the magazine company is putting on, but while on the way there a man comes over to hers and Doreen's cab. They get out and go to the bar with him. They ask her what her name is, but she lies and says her name is Elly and that she's from Chicago. The man's name is Lenny and he wants Doreen to go with him, but she won't go unless "Elly" goes as well.
Response: Why would she lie and say her name is Elly? So far I really like this book (:
